He’s graduating from West Virginia University, a school that has more school spirit than it can handle… and that’s what I love most about it. There are many environmental benefits of urban trees, or as I would like to call it the Urban Forest, some which are more prevalent than others. The most well-known environmental benefits of trees are oxygen, clean air, and shade. Wait! Did you know that there are many more benefits than this that can be just as important? Recently with the cost of energy going up and the health of the economy going down people are looking for ways to conserve energy. Trees can conserve energy and save money in the summer and winter months by creating a microclimate around your home. In the summer when the leaves are green and on the tree, the sun will be reflected away from the house providing a cooling effect. Though this will not make your air conditioner obsolete, it will save money on your electric bill. During the cold winter months the leaves are off the trees which provide an avenue for the warm sun to hit your house while simultaneously shielding some of the wind which would cool the house. A tree buffer can reduce the force of wind by up to 2/3 its normal velocity. This will help to reduce your energy bill.
